Overcast Podcast App
The honest entry. The screen changes this one least, and it is here for what happens on the other half of it.
Free · 4.60 from 6,160 ratings · iOS 18.0 or later · updated 21 October 2026
Overcast's listing is unusually plain about what the app is: a podcast player written by one person, with no venture money behind it. Two features carry it. Smart Speed shortens the silences without raising the pitch of anyone's voice, and Voice Boost levels the volume between the show recorded in a studio and the show recorded in a kitchen.
Everything else is the competent middle of the category. Offline downloads, search and recommendations, playlists with smart filters and per-podcast priorities, a sleep timer, a standalone Apple Watch app that streams over cellular, CarPlay, and the ability to subscribe to a single episode so you can try a show without committing to it.
The listing also states there is no third-party analytics, no ad service and no tracking code in the app. That is a stronger claim than most players in this category are willing to make.
What the fold changes
Audio does not need pixels. What the fold adds is the second pane: show notes, a chapter list or a transcript sitting beside whatever else you have open, instead of a now-playing screen holding the whole device hostage. If you want one entry on this list to argue with, make it this one.
That is an argument rather than a test. The iPhone Duo has been on sale since 23 October 2026 and this app has not been seen running on one.
