Everything downloaded before you leave
Apps that keep working with the signal off — and that are therefore the apps most likely to be the only screen you have, for hours, with nothing else to check against.
Offline is usually sold as insurance. It is more interesting than that on a device that opens, because the situations where you have no signal are the situations where the phone is the only screen: a flight, a ridge, a basement, a train through somewhere rural. There is no laptop to fall back to and no second window to put the other thing in.
Every app here states in its own listing that it works without a connection — downloaded books, cached maps, local files, saved articles. That is a claim the developer makes, and it is the claim this list is selected on, not a judgement about how well any of them does it.
The order runs roughly by how much of the day the app could plausibly be the whole of.
- 1

Amazon Kindle: Reading App
Reading · AMZN Mobile LLC
Books downloaded to the device, including the formats that are laid out rather than reflowed — magazines, graphic novels and textbooks with colour images. Those are the ones that justify carrying a bigger screen into somewhere with no signal, because they are the ones a small screen genuinely cannot show.
- 2

Libby, the library app
OverDrive, Inc.
A library card, and the public library's ebooks, audiobooks and magazines downloaded for offline reading or streamed to save space. Magazines in particular are fixed-layout, which is where the size of the page you are reading on stops being a preference.
- 3

OS Maps: Walk, Hike, Run, Bike
Ordnance Survey
Britain's national mapping, with routes downloaded so they survive losing signal — which on a hill is the normal condition rather than the exception. A topographic map is a document you read outward from where you are, and how far outward is set by the glass.
- 4

Gaia GPS: Mobile Trail Maps
Trailbehind, INC.
Topographic layers, hill-shading and offline navigation, aimed at ground where the trail is a suggestion. Layer-on-layer reading is comparison work, and comparison needs area rather than detail.
- 5

MapOut
Valnova GmbH
An offline map of the whole world, with routes drawn by hand and elevation profiles underneath. A route and its elevation profile are two views of one thing, and they are only useful together.
- 6

Instapaper
Instant Paper, Inc.
Articles saved and stored for reading offline, stripped to text and formatted for the screen. The queue is the point — it is built up when connected and worked through when not — and a longer queue is easier to pick from when more of it is listed at once.
- 7

Obsidian - Connected Notes
Dynalist Inc.
A local folder of plain Markdown files, so the notes are on the device by construction rather than by a sync setting. Offline is not a feature here, it is the architecture, which makes it the one on the list least likely to surprise you at the wrong moment.
- 8

Craft: Notes, Documents, AI
Craft Docs Limited
Documents written and edited with no connection, syncing when one comes back. The listing's framing is that your best ideas do not wait for an internet connection; the corollary is that the editor has to be as usable on the plane as at the desk.
The selection and the order are ours. Each entry is written from that app’s own App Store listing, linked beside it, and this page from Apple's iPhone Duo product page. Drafted with AI assistance and checked back against those sources before publishing; the disclosure page explains how. The iPhone Duo has been on sale since 23 October 2026 and nothing here has been seen running on one, so what each entry says about the fold is an argument rather than a test.
